Chris was an inspiration to me. I always found him a great supporter and friend and tried to be the same to him. He always had a great capability to do pretty much anything with a natural ease; he knew this yet it was never taken for granted . He had a great humility and kindness. He was instrumental in my career and I also had the great pleasure of working with him in NI. We enjoyed the simple pleasures of good food, a pint of beer, watching and talking about football. I enjoyed the frequent games of golf with him; more for the conversation and opportunity to catch up, for he invariably beat me. I saw at first hand how he was so harshly treated in the political bear pit that NI was then, and how he responded with courage, dignity and a quiet resolve. I also know how he was loved by the people who actually worked for him there. He was seen by them as a compassionate and kind leader. I know he loved and felt loved by Julia and Daisy and Grace. He was always very proud of them and their achievements . This is also very true of his bigger girls. He also got great pleasure visiting them and his grandchildren in the SW. It is a shame he was taken away from his family so early but he will be looking down with pride as you all live your lives from now on. I am in Australia right now so will not unfortunately be able to attend the funeral. I will however take some time to remember the kind and inspiring man that touched my life. Colin Brown
