I recruited Chris to the board of Monitor when I set it up in 2004, and we worked closely together for nearly seven years. He is one of the best colleagues I ever had. His contributions at Monitor were always spot on, and his advice to me and to the senior staff was always well-considered. He was highly regarded by the Monitor team and by the Department of Health. He had strong technical skills as an accountant. But his contributions went much wider than finance. He also had a good understanding of people and was a shrewd judge of the motivations of individuals and of how to influence their thinking and behaviour. Chris’ style was admirable –quiet, clear and authoritative. Chris never had to raise his voice or repeat himself, because he was listened to carefully, even by the boards of hospitals who didn’t necessarily like, or want to hear, the message Chris was delivering. He was principled, with strong values. But he was also a pragmatist, and offered sound advice on when to continue to press arguments and when to draw a line and settle and move on. This kind of advice is invaluable to a chairman or a senior management team. When Chris and I last had lunch some time ago he talked with great pride about Daisy and Grace and their achievements and plans. He was clearly a very proud and loving father. The entries in this Book of Condolence are truly humbling. The warmth that comes through and the high regard in which Chris was held is wonderful. I am very sorry Chris is no longer with us.
